Before becoming a national park in 1960, Lake Manyara was a popular sport hunting ground, visited by legends like Theodore Roosevelt and Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway called it “the loveliest I had seen in Africa” in his book Green Hills of Africa. To safeguard its rich wildlife, the British colonial government first made it a game reserve, and in 1981, UNESCO honored it as part of the Man and Biosphere Program.
